Accounting & Audit

Turn Your Audits Upside Down — Making Your Audits Data Driven
New Class Lecture Intermediate

A data-driven audit is planned to be multi-dimensional versus the current linear approach. This data-drive audit approach will maximize the use of detailed transactional data across multiple data sets to minimize the number of process steps and hand-offs to the client to carry out audit procedures; the auditor starts with all the transactional data in the client’s system and uses data analytics to analyze the transactional activity. This session will discuss steps you can take right now to transform your audit practice into a data-driven audit practice.

Start Preparing Now for Audits in the Future: A Fresh Look at Your People, Process and Systems
New Class Lecture Intermediate

Audit clients continue to become more global, diverse and technology-reliant, while the audit methodologies used by most firms haven’t fundamentally changed in 25 years. While there have long been discussions that the future audit will shift from attesting on past results once per year to delivering real-time assurance, very little has been accomplished to date. This session will discuss approaches to integrating with our clients’ systems and data analytics and lay out a model for how firms need to start preparing for this future with a focus on the firm’s people, processes and systems. During this session, specific recommendations will be presented to start positioning the firm for the future. Topics include: Future vision and direction; Audit of the future-dynamic integration; Prepare your people now; Start changing your process; What systems do I need now and in the future; and Moving ideas to action.

Deep Dive into the ASC 842, Leases
New Class Lecture Update

After years of debate, the new Leases standard was issued in 2016. While it started out as a highly anticipated convergence project with the IASB, ASU 2016–02 did not result in convergence between the standard-setting boards. In this session, we will examine the impact of implementing the new standard on the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement. We will discuss both the impact to lessees as well as lessors. As usual, this GLS session explores the practical realities of implementation while identifying topics that entities may need to consider as they implement the standard.

Creating Five-Star Client Experiences
New Class Lecture Overview

Client experiences are made up of an accumulation of “touchpoints” — various interactions that occur over time and in many different forms. Some touchpoints are obvious, and some are obscure, but all contribute to the collective experience that a client has with a firm. To achieve a Five-Star Client Experience, a firm must first identify where touchpoints occur, and all factors that impact those touchpoints. This process begins from the inside and works out, optimizing human behaviors, firm functions, and processes that integrate to embody the firm’s values and create the desired client experience. This session will provide an Overview of a process that marketers can champion within their firms.

Hiring for the Firm of the Future
New Class Lecture Overview

Modern firms are embracing cloud accounting tools and new advisory business models such as Client Accounting Services which requires alternative staffing options like flex, remote, and gig to build attractive workplaces and effective teams that deliver exceptional value to clients. And still, for legacy services like Audit and Tax, the talent shortage demands that firms embrace these same alternative options to build teams. Modern firms hire candidates who look more like tech-savvy consultants who can advise clients on financial matters. Hiring this talent requires a shift in approach.

Section 199A Regulation Update
New Class Lecture Update

While the IRS did come out with critical guidance on Section 199A early in 2019, many questions remain unanswered and businesses that are looking at taking advantage of the Qualified Business Income Deduction still need to sort through the regulations and figure out how all that plays into long-term planning. Many businesses are still looking at whether they should switch to C Corp status because of the new lower rates, but are still finding the S Corp offers the most benefits. This session will cover how 199A is being applied and what the next developments in the QBID will be, as it is applied to S Corps, partnerships, LLCs, and sole practitioners.

Section 163(j) Regulations — Complications and Opportunities
New Class Lecture Intermediate

The new section 163(j) limitations on business interest exemptions will be a big change for many businesses. This session with seasoned tax pro Greg White, CPA, will review the complications and opportunities presented as well as the latest from the IRS on regulations and guidance to include — What’s the big picture? Which of your clients will be affected and how will they be affected? When must companies be “combined” to see if their three-year trailing average gross receipts exceed $25 million? How do you fill out Form K-1 if your business client isn’t subject to the new restrictions, but some of its owners might be? What planning techniques are available to reduce the impact? Your client received a partnership K-1 in 2018 showing excess business interest expense; How do you treat this on your client’s 2019 Form 1040? Which of your clients will be “tax shelters” and therefore subject to these restrictions, even though their average trailing gross receipts are less than $25 million?
